Self Care: The Essentials of Mindfulness

Learn the essentials of mindfulness to cultivate physical, mental & emotional well-being

 

Learn the basics of mindfulness and why the science shows how beneficial it is for your body, mind and spirit.  Self-Care Masterclasses is a 4-week course at the Elwood & St Kilda Neighbourhood Learning Centre, starting on 6 June 2024. It is now open for enrolments.  

This 4-week course will introduce you to the foundations of mindfulness and how to practically apply it in your everyday life to nurture your well-being. The course explores key principles of mindfulness, how to bring it into your daily life and simple practices for everyday use.  It is designed for beginners and anyone looking to learn more about mindfulness and enhance their self-care.

The course is  suitable for people for all ages and backgrounds. All classes are trauma-informed spaces of safety and support.

This course is led by Sally Richmond, a registered mindfulness teacher and Social Worker, who has worked in health and human services for more than 20 years.  In this course, Sally brings her expertise in mindfulness, how states of stress and calm work in the body and her experience as a longstanding meditator.  

This course includes four in-person classes 6th - 27th June, Thursdays 11am - 12 noon.  It is an in-person course at the Elwood and St Kilda Neighbourhood House, 87 Tennyson St, Elwood.  Cost for the 4 week course: $80/$55 concession.

Course Outline

This course is an introduction to the core foundations of mindfulness and how to apply it in your life.  It is designed to equip you with a deeper understanding of what mindfulness is, the science of how our body and mind work in states of stress and calm and an introduction to the key mindfulness practices to apply in your everyday life.

The course includes 4 classes (1 hour each).  Each class includes interactive teaching, guided mindfulness practices (10 - 15 minutes) and discussion.

Class 1 - The Basics of Mindfulness and How it Nurtures Well-being?

Class 2 - Understanding Our Nervous System and Listening to the Body

Class 3 - Generating Self Compassion Towards Yourself

Class 4 - Bringing it all Together: How to Integrate Mindfulness into Your Everyday Life

In this course you will learn:

- What mindfulness is and how it enhances your physical, mental & emotional well-being?

- Core mindfulness principles

- Simple, easy to use practices that you can use in everyday life

- Understanding the science of how the body, mind and nervous system works

- How to listen to your body

- The stress reactivity cycle

- Understanding states of stress and calm in the mind and body

- What are thoughts and why are they so gripping?

- Unhelpful thought patterns

- Working with emotions - a mindful approach

- The practice of self compassion

- Applying mindfulness in your everyday day life

- Finding tools and resources that work best for you

- How mindfulness is an ongoing path of growth, discovery and deep well-being - next steps   

The course also includes guided meditation practices led by the teacher.
